Building Trust with Mechanisms, Not Promises

We're building Kool to stay calm, without manipulation or dark patterns. Our safety features, like guardian approval on the send path and one-tap 'tell my parent', are designed to be transparent and honest. We're not perfect, but we're committed to showing our mechanisms, not just making promises. Our public status page and trust page are examples of this commitment. We believe that saying what we don't do is just as important as saying what we do. Kool does not collect data for advertising.

Designing for Families, Not Just Children

When designing Kool, we prioritized the child's experience and safety. Our one-tap 'tell my parent' feature allows children to easily communicate with their guardians. We also implemented guardian approval on the send path, to ensure that children are not sharing content without their guardian's knowledge. Our help center is available in eleven languages, to support families from diverse backgrounds. We believe that safety and honesty go hand-in-hand, and we're committed to showing our mechanisms, not just making promises. Kool does not use engineered urgency or borrowed scarcity to engage users.

Support is a product surface

Help articles are not documentation you write once and forget. They are where people go when the product has already failed them. So we treat the help centre like a feature, with the same review bar.

How the app got its name

It was called four other things first. Two were taken, one was unpronounceable, and one tested badly in every language we tried.

Why we killed the password

Passwords are the weakest link in almost every breach, and the worst part of every sign-up flow. So we removed them. Kool uses passwordless sign-in end to end: nothing to remember, nothing to leak, nothing for us to store badly.

Designing for light and dark from day one

Dark mode bolted on at the end always looks bolted on. Every colour in Kool is a token, and every token has both values from the moment it is created. Nothing ships until it has been read in both.

One icon, two backgrounds

The obvious way to ship an icon set that works in light and dark is to draw it twice. Optical weight really does not survive an inversion, so the argument is a good one. We do not do it, and the reason is worth more than the icons are.

Moderation without a panopticon

You can keep people safe without reading everything they write. The way to do it is to be specific about what each layer looks at, when it runs, and what it deliberately does not cover.

Accessibility is not a phase

Accessibility is not a phase, and it is not an audit you book before launch. It is a set of small properties that are cheap to hold continuously and expensive to retrofit. Three of ours, and how each one is actually enforced.

Why we do not sell your data

"We do not sell your data" is the cheapest sentence in technology. Everybody says it, several of the companies saying it are describing an arrangement that a normal person would call selling, and the phrase has been worn smooth to the point of carrying no information. So here is the version with the mechanism in it.
